Following revelations that an anti-Islam film was widely used by the New York Police Department (NYPD), Islamic groups have warned of more bigotry against US Muslims in the future.
The film, titled The Third Jihad, is a spectacularly offensive 72 minute-long footage depicting flaming churches, burning American flags, frenzied crowds, bombing carnages and seething mullahs.
NYPD officials now say the "wacky movie" should never have been shown to officers.
The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the propaganda video used in NYPD's mandatory counter-terrorism training is part of an unfortunate Islamophobic phenomenon which is on the rise in the US.
This "will lead law enforcement and counter-terrorism officials to view Islam and Muslims with suspicion," CAIR national communications director, Ibrahim Hooper, told Press TV.
He added that the NYPD film shows US department and organizations tasked with fighting terror "seeking groups and consultants that offer negative information about Islam and Muslims".
CAIR had previously warned counter-terrorism and military leaders not to employ Muslim-bashers as trainers.
"Seeking to learn more about Islam… some law enforcement agencies have hired as trainers self-described experts whose extremist views are considered inaccurate and counterproductive by the FBI and US intelligence agencies," the US Islamic group said.
Robert Spencer, the director of Jihad Watch website and the author of over a dozen anti-Islam books, has been identified as one of America's most notorious Islamophobes.
According to independent media watchdog Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), Spencer is one of "Islamophobia's Dirty Dozen" who systematically "spread fear, bigotry, and misinformation.”
